Encountering God
Every Sunday, we gather at church for worship. But Sunday worship is more than just a
weekly gathering; it is a sacred appointment with the living God. Often, the impact of
that encounter hinges on the condition of our hearts long before we walk through the
church doors. Preparing our hearts for worship isn’t complicated, but it is intentional. By
embracing five simple practices, we can transform Sunday from a routine obligation into
a life-shaping moment of worship, fellowship, and obedience.
1. Prepare Your Heart
The first step toward meaningful worship begins privately, long before the service starts.
Preparing your heart means approaching God with humility, openness, and a willingness
to be shaped by His Word. A simple prayer — “Lord, give me a receptive and obedient
spirit” — can soften the soil of the soul. When we come before God with teachability, He
meets us with grace, conviction, and renewal. Heart preparation is not emotional hype;
it is spiritual readiness.
2. Pray for the Service
Worship is not a performance; it is a spiritual work. That means it requires spiritual
power. Praying for your pastor, the worship team, and the movement of the Holy Spirit
invites God to work in ways beyond human ability. Intercession aligns your heart with
God’s purposes and opens the door for Him to move freely among His people. When a
congregation prays for its leaders and its worship, the entire atmosphere shifts —
expectancy rises, distractions fade, and God’s presence becomes tangible.
3. Come Expecting God to Speak
Expectation is a powerful spiritual posture. When believers arrive anticipating that God
will speak, they listen differently, worship differently, and respond differently.
Expectation turns routine into revelation. Instead of “going to church,” we come to hear
from the Lord. This mindset elevates every part of the service — the songs, the prayers,
the sermon, and even the conversations in the hallway. God speaks to those who are
ready to hear.
4. Arrive Ready to Encourage Others
Sunday worship is not only vertical; it is horizontal. Scripture calls believers to
“strengthen and bless” one another, and Sunday is one of the richest opportunities to
do so. A warm greeting, a sincere prayer, a word of encouragement, or simply noticing
someone who needs kindness can be a ministry in itself. When we arrive with the
intention to build others up, we reflect Christ’s love and contribute to a spiritually healthy
church family.
5. Determine to Obey What You Hear
The final step is the most crucial: obedience. Hearing God’s Word is not the goal — living
it is. A heart that determines beforehand to obey whatever God reveals is a heart that
grows. Obedience transforms sermons into action, worship into lifestyle, and conviction
into change. When believers commit to obey, Sunday becomes the launching point for
a week of faithful living.
On Saturday, many of us will enjoy great food as part of our Independence Day
celebration. I hope your celebration will include church on Sunday. I also hope you will
take a moment to prepare your heart and soul as we meet God here.
Have a blessed and safe weekend.
